RemotePC Free Review

RemotePC was a free remote access program for Windows and Mac. It includes nice features like chat, file transfer, and multiple monitor support. Both mobile devices and desktop software can be used to make a remote connection with a RemotePC computer.

I'll be honest, RemotePC isn't the perfect remote access tool, but there's a lot to like, and it may be the right choice for you depending on your needs:

How RemotePC Works

The same program can be installed for both the host and the client, which means there aren't any confusing utilities or random tools that you must download in order to make RemotePC work — just install the same program on both the host and the client computer.

Once both computers have RemotePC installed and open, there are two ways to use it for remote access:

Always-ON Remote Access

The best way to use RemotePC is by registering for a user account so that you can keep track of the other computer that you'll be connecting to. For example, you'll want to do this if you like to have permanent access to your own computer when away, or to your friend's computer who always needs help.

On the computer that you'll be remoting into later, open the Always-ON Remote Access area of RemotePC and click Configure Now! to get started. Name the computer something recognizable and then type a "Key" in both the spaces provided (the key acts as the password to access that computer later).

Once you've enabled the always-on remote access in Remote PC, you can log in to RemotePC on a different system and remote into the host computer whenever you want. Just select it from the list and enter the key/password you made up.

One-Time Access

You can also use RemotePC for spontaneous, instant access. To do this, just open the program and go into the Provide One-Time Access area of the program, and click Enable Now!.

Give the other person the "Access ID" and "Key" you see on the screen so that they can remote in to your computer. They can do that by entering that same ID and password into the Connect using One-Time ID area of RemotePC in their program.

Once the session is over, you can use the Disable Access button to revoke that key/password so that the other person can't get back onto your computer unless you re-enable one-time access, which will produce a brand new password.

My Thoughts on RemotePC

RemotePC is a really smart program to use if you just want to have spontaneous remote support with someone, but it's also perfectly well suited for unattended access to your own computer.

I always like having file transfer capabilities when connecting to a remote computer, which RemotePC fortunately includes (it was even in their free plan). Interestingly, the file transfer tool doesn't have to be used as part of the remote access tool; you can transfer files without even opening the full remote control screen.

It's also great that it has a chat feature since other programs, like AeroAdmin, lack this.

RemotePC Alternatives

There are lots of programs like RemotePC that I recommend you use instead, at least if you're looking for a free alternative. Chrome Remote Desktop and Remote Utilities are two suggestions that are good for always-on remote access, like to your own computer.
