D-Link DIR-655 Default Password

The D-Link DIR-655 default username is admin. Routers of a different manufacturer sometimes don't require a username at all, but this router must have one.

As with most D-Link routers, this one doesn't require a password—just leave that field blank.

The default IP address used to access the administration page is 192.168.0.1.

What to Do If the DIR-655 Default Password Won't Work

The default username and password for routers are meant to be changed to something more secure. If you can no longer log in to your DIR-655, chances are you or someone else changed this default information at some point.

Fortunately, resetting the D-Link DIR-655 router is really easy, and doing so will restore the default information so you can log in with the username/password from above.

Here's how to reset this router:

1. The reset button is located on the back where the cables are plugged in, so turn the router around so you can see the small hole that houses the Reset button.

2. With something small and pointy, such as a paperclip, reach into the hole and press and hold the button down for 10 seconds.

3. After releasing the Reset button, the router will reboot. Wait 30 seconds for it to finish starting up.

4. Once the DIR-655 is powered on fully, disconnect the power cable for a few seconds and then plug it back in and wait another 30 seconds for it to power on yet again.

5. Use the default IP address of http://192.168.0.1 to access the router's login page and then enter the default username of admin.

6. It's important to now set a default router password so it isn't this easy for anyone to log in to your router. If you're afraid you'll forget the password again, consider storing it in a password manager.

7. Re-enter any wireless network settings you had set up before the router was reset.

Resetting a router to its factory default settings flushes out any custom options you've set up. To avoid losing this information in the future if you have to reset the router again, back up the router's configuration from the TOOLS > SYSTEM menu using the Save Configuration button. You can restore these settings again with the Restore Configuration from File button.

What to Do When You Can't Access the DIR-655 Router

Just as you can change the DIR-655 default username and password, the IP address of 192.168.0.1 can be customized too. If you can't access your router using that IP address, you've likely changed it to something else but have forgotten what that new address is.

Instead of resetting the router in order to get the default IP address back, you can use a computer that's already connected to the router to see which IP address is set as the default gateway. This will tell you the IP address of your DIR-655.

The address you find is the one needed to log in to the router using the default password from above or the password you changed it to. Log in just like you would if the address were 192.168.0.1 (e.g. http://192.168.0.5).
