Yellow Exclamation Marks in Device Manger

Friday October 31, 2008
A common question I receive is "why is there a yellow exclamation mark in device manager?" I'd say I get one of these every few days. Unfortunately, the answer isn't straightforward.

The yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager is really just a clue. All it's saying is that something is wrong - nothing about what is actually wrong. By looking at the device status, however, you can get a lot more details on the hardware error - usually enough to start some more serious troubleshooting.

The times I’ve encountered this problem I’ve found that its either a matter of simply uninstalling the device drivers and letting the device correct itself, or the more serious deleting of registry entries, but there really is no way to know for sure until you research the status along with the what ever device is having the problem.
