You have to partition a hard drive before you can use the drive in Windows. To partition a hard drive basically means to divide it in to parts and make it available to Windows.
It's really not at all difficult to partition a hard drive even though it might sound very technical. Every operating system, Windows or otherwise, requires that you partition a hard drive before it's used.
The specific steps you need to follow to partition a hard drive from the Disk Management tool depend on the version of Windows you're running:
- How To Partition a Hard Drive in Windows 7
- How To Partition a Hard Drive in Windows Vista
- How To Partition a Hard Drive in Windows XP
Important: After you partition a hard drive, you must then format the hard drive. See How To Format a Hard Drive in Windows for instructions.
