STOP 0x00000007 errors are likely caused by hardware or device driver issues. The error always appears on a STOP message, which is usually referred to as a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Any of Microsoft's Windows NT-based operating systems could experience this error. This includes newer versions like Windows 11 and Windows 10, as well as older ones like Windows XP and Windows 2000.

STOP 0x00000007 Errors

One or both of these errors may display on the STOP message:

STOP: 0x00000007
INVALID_SOFTWARE_INTERRUPT
Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) in Windows 10

The error may be abbreviated as STOP 0x7, but the full STOP code is always displayed on the blue screen STOP message. If you don't see one of those exact messages—or you see one very similar, like 0x0000007F—check this Complete List of STOP Error Codes and reference the troubleshooting information for the STOP message that you are seeing.

If Windows is able to start after the error, you may be prompted with a Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown message that shows:

Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
BCCode: 7

There are all types of errors that could display in Windows, but similar words and numbers don't necessarily mean that the errors are related. Some are software-specific and others could be Device Manager error codes.

How to Fix STOP 0x00000007 Errors

This STOP code is rare, so there's little troubleshooting information available that's specific to the error. However, since most STOP errors have similar causes, there are some basic troubleshooting steps to help:

  1. Restart your computer if you haven't already done so. The STOP 0x00000007 blue screen error may not occur again after rebooting.

  2. Install this August 2014 update from Microsoft if you're running Windows 8.1, your computer has 1 GB of RAM, and you're starting the computer in Windows Recovery Environment.
