5 Free File Converters for Occasionally Used Formats

Best Free Converters for Compressed, Disc Image, Fonts, and Other Formats

By , About.com Guide

The most popular kinds of file converters are video converters, audio converters, image converters, and document converters.

But, what if the file you need converted isn't one of these types of files? There are many formats that are not video, audio, image, or document based.

Here are several freeware file converters for several less common formats like disc images, fonts, compressed files, and more:

Note: Most of these programs convert only certain types of files so look through them all for one that supports the file type you need to convert. Let me know of any other free "misc" converters I can add to this list.

1. ImgBurn (Disc Image Converter)

ImgBurn - Free Disc Image Converter Software© LIGHTNING UK!

ImgBurn is a free disc image converter program that supports the majority of common disc image formats.

Input Formats: BIN, CCD, CDI, CDR, CUE, DI, DVD, GCM, GI, IBQ, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG, PDI, and UDI

Output Formats: BIN, IMG, and ISO

Actually, ImgBurn is an advanced, full featured CD/DVD/BD disc burning and image management tool but it works great at converting between most popular disc image file types.

2. FreeFontConverter (Font Converter)

FreeFontConverter - Free Font Converter Service© It-Mechanic.co.uk

FreeFontConverter is, you guessed it, a free font converter. The service operates all online - no download required - and it supports just about every font format that has ever existed.

Input Formats: BDF, BIN, CEF, CFF, DFONT, GSF, IK, MF, OTB, OTF, PFA, PFB, PT3, SFD, SUIT, SVG, T42, TTC, and TTF

Output Formats: BIN, CFF, CID, CID.CFF, CID.T42, DFONT, MM.PFA, MM.PFB, OTF, OTF.DFONT, PFA, PFB, PS, PT3, SVG, CYM.TTF, T42, TTF, and TTF.BIN

If you need a font converted, I doubt you'll find service, or software title, better than FreeFontConverter.

3. Snippet Converter (Source Code Converter)

Snippet Converter is a web-based source code converter. You can easily convert between several popular programming languages with this free source code converter.

Input Formats: C# and VB.NET

Output Formats: Boo, C#, Python, Ruby, and VB.NET

4. Zamzar (Compressed File Converter)

Zamzar - Free Compressed File Converter Service© Zamzar

Zamzar is an online file converter service that supports several popular archive and compressed file formats.

Input Formats: 7Z, TAR.BZ2, CAB, LZH, RAR, TAR, TAR.GZH, YZ1, and ZIP

Output Formats: 7Z, TAR.BZ2, CAB, LZH, TAR, TAR.GZH, YZ1, and ZIP

Zamzar is also a very good image converter and document converter.

The 100MB source file limit at Zamzar makes it impossible to use the service for large compressed files. Zamzar's conversion time is also slower than some other online file converters I've tested.

5. YouConvertIt (Compressed File Converter)

YouConvertIt - Free Compressed File Converter Service© YouConvertIt

YouConvertIt is another online file converter service that will convert several compressed and archive file formats.

Input Formats: 7Z, ACE, ARJ, BZ2, CAB, GZ, RAR, TAR, TGZ, YZ1, ZIP

Output Formats: 7Z, BZA, BZ2, CAB, RAR, TAR, TGZ, YZ1, ZIP

YouConvertIt has a 300MB input limit which, like other online file converters with size limits, could exclude it as an option if your file is larger.

However, YouConvertIt does do well as a document converter and an image converter and because those types of files are usually much less than 300MB in size.
