What Is an MOGG File?

MOGG files contain audio data for video games

What to Know

  • An MOGG file is a Multitrack Ogg formatted file used by some video games to store audio content.
  • Audacity is one program that can play MOGG files.
  • Convert from MOGG to WAV, OGG, MP3, FLAC, WMA, etc., with Audacity.

This article describes what a MOGG file is and how to open one or convert one to a different audio format.

What Is an MOGG File?

A file with the MOGG file extension is a Multitrack Ogg formatted file used by Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and possibly some other video games.

These files contain OGG audio files that are stored in such a way that each one can play separately or together with all the others. Each OGG file is stored in a separate track so they're not bound to the same playback stream.

Most MOGG files are music files, but some might instead be MedCalc data files.

How to Open an MOGG File

You can play MOGG files on a computer for free using Audacity. The format is also supported in Avid Pro Tools software, Steinberg Nuendo, and REAPER.

If you use Audacity, you'll have the option to save the audio data to a new format. See the section below on converting for more information.

OGG files are much more usable than MOGG files. See the several applications that let you play OGG files here: What Is an OGG File?

MOGG files that are used with the statistical program MedCalc probably can't actually be opened manually by the software, but are instead just regular data files that the program needs to function. In other words, they're likely stored in the program's installation folder so that MedCalc can use them as needed, but there probably isn't a menu within the program that will let you import the file.

How to Convert an MOGG File

A Multitrack Ogg file can be converted to another audio format using Audacity. The program supports exporting MOGG to WAV, OGG, MP3, FLAC, WMA, as well as some other common audio formats.

With Audacity, you can choose to export the entire file or just a single stream. To convert just one section, first select the audio and then use the File > Export > Export Selected Audio menu option to choose an output format.

OggSplit+ is a portable and free tool that should be able to split an MOGG file into the different OGG files that it's made up of. You'll need a file extractor program like 7-Zip to extract the OggSplit+ program from its archive, after which you can drag the MOGG file onto OggSplit+.exe to use it.

We can't think of a good reason you'd ever want to convert a MedCalc MOGG file. Considering the role it plays in that program, any conversion done on it would probably render the file useless.

Still Can't Open It?

If none of these programs can open your file, make sure you're reading the file extension correctly. It's possible that you're just misreading the suffix and thinking that your file belongs to the same format as MOGG files, when really it's entirely different.

For example, some files, like MacGourmet recipe files (MGO), share some of the same file extension letters but have nothing to do with the file formats mentioned on this page. These are used with MacGourmet Deluxe.

Similar is the MOGRT file extension that's used for Adobe motion graphics templates. While the file extension might closely resemble MOGG, the format is actually only usable with Adobe Premiere Pro.

If it's not already clear, the idea here is to identify the file extension and then research the one your file is using. That's the easiest way to learn what format the file is in and, ultimately, the program that can be used to open or convert the file.
