What to Know

  • An EPM file could be an encrypted portable media file. It's unclear how this file type is opened.
  • Other EPM files might be associated with Check Point's Encryption Policy Manager.
  • Encrypted files can't be converted until they're decrypted. Then, you can use it with a file converter tool.

This article explains what an EPM file is and how to open or convert one to a different file format.

What Is an EPM File?

A file with the EPM file extension could be an encrypted portable media file, possibly associated with MPE Encoder from Destiny Media Technologies. Unlike other media file formats like MP3, WAV, MP4, etc., files in this format can't be opened with just any multimedia player.

EPM may instead refer to Encryption Policy Manager, which is an encryption client program used with Check Point security software for encrypting portable removable media storage devices like flash drives, CDs, and DVDs, etc.

EPM files in Windows 10 that open with 7-Zip

EPM is also short for Oracle Enterprise Performance Management, the unit of concentration called equivalents per million, Extended Power Menu, and CyberArk Endpoint Privilege Manager, but these don't have anything to do with the file formats discussed on this page.

How to Open an EPM File

EPM files that are encrypted media files require a certain program to play the video or audio file you might have. The program associated with this format might be from Destiny Media Technologies, but we, unfortunately, don't have any other information than that.

Some EPM files may be containers for other files, similar to the ZIP format. If that's what your file is, you might have luck extracting its contents using a file unzip tool like 7-Zip.

For example, if you're using 7-Zip, just right-click or tap and hold the EPM file, and then pick the option that says 7-Zip > Open archive. You'll then be able to see the contents stored inside and copy out the files you want, or extract everything out at once.

The Check Point Media Encryption Software Blade opens files associated with Check Point's Encryption Policy Manager.

If you find that an application on your PC does try to open the file, but it's the wrong application or you'd rather have another installed program open it, you can change which program opens EPM files by default in Windows.

How to Convert an EPM File

If you manage to get an MP3 from the EPM file, you can use a free audio converter to convert it to some other audio format like WAV.

The same is true for encrypted videos that are stored as EPM files—a free video converter can convert MP4s and other similar formats.

Still Can't Open the File?

If you still can't open your file, you might be misreading the file extension. Some files have a similar file extension even though they don't open with the same program.

Some examples of this include EMP, EAP, PEM, EPS, EPC, RPM, CEP, EPRT, and EPUB files.
