D-Link DIR-605L Default Password

The DIR-605L has no default password, but it does have a default username and IP address

What to Know

  • The DIR-605L doesn't have a default password (don't type anything). The default username is admin.
  • The default IP address is 192.168.0.1.
  • You can reset the router to restore these default login details.

This article explains what the default login details are for the DIR-605L router from D-Link. It also describes how to reset the router if the default password doesn't work.

D-Link DIR-605L Router Default Login Information

As with nearly all other D-Link routers, the DIR-605L doesn't use a default password. There is a default username, however, of admin.

The DIR-605L's default IP address is 192.168.0.1. This address, when entered as a URL (http://192.168.0.1), accesses the router's administration panel.

D-Link didn't change any default access data from version A to version B, so the above credentials work for both hardware revisions. If those details don't work with your router, you might be misreading the model number; check out this list of D-Link default passwords for information on other models.

The DIR-605L Default Password Doesn't Work

Change the DIR-605L default password to something complex and hard to guess, because leaving it blank isn't a good security practice.

If you don't know the password, reset the router to its factory default settings — the username and password will be restored to their defaults.

Resetting a router isn't the same thing as restarting a routerResetting will remove all the settings, including any custom password or username, effectively reconfiguring the software back to factory defaults. Resetting and restarting are different; rebooting/restarting is simply shutting the device down and then powering it back on.

Here's how to perform a reset:

  1. Turn the router around so you have full access to the back of the router.

  2. Find your way to the far right side of the back of the router, next to the right antenna, to locate the recessed Reset button.

  3. Press and hold the Reset button for 10 seconds. You may need to use a paperclip or other small, pointy tool to get through the hole.

  4. Give the router an additional 30 seconds to cycle through the reset procedure and power back on.

  5. Remove the power cable from the back for just a few seconds and then plug it back in.

  6. Wait another 30 seconds for the router to finish starting up.

  7. You can now use the default information from above (admin username and a blank password) to get back into your router at the http://192.168.0.1 address.

  8. Create a new password for the router and save it somewhere safe, like in a password manager, so you always have access to it.

Now that the router has been reset, all the custom options you configured, like the wireless password, etc., have been lost and must be reconfigured.

I recommend backing up the router's configuration after you've customized all the settings. If you ever need to restore the router again, you can then just reload all those options. Access this on the Maintenance > Save and Restore Settings page.

What to Do When You Can't Access the DIR-605L Router

Like the default username and password mentioned above, the DIR-605L, like all routers, have a default IP address — 192.168.0.1 in the case of this one. Also, as with the login credentials, you're free to change the default IP address to something else.

If you're unable to access this router because you've forgotten what you customized the IP address to, finding it is easier than resetting the entire router. All you have to do is find the default gateway that a computer connected to the router is configured to use.

Since there are two hardware versions, there are also two different firmware downloads. Make sure you download the correct one for your specific router. You can find the right hardware version for your DIR-605L on either the bottom or back of the router; look for the letter next to H/W Ver. on the product label.
