I've talked a lot about Windows 8 recently, haven't I? Believe it or not, I don't blog about everything I read, but I have to share this one:
Microsoft this week (thanks for the heads up, ZDnet) announced that existing Windows 7, Vista, and XP users will be able to download a fully functional upgrade version of Windows 8 Pro for only $39.99! This is the exact same Windows 8 you'll be able to walk into a store and buy.
An upgrade from one version of Windows to the next usually runs $100 or more.
You can read all about the announcement here.
Does this newly announced "bargain" price of $40 for Windows 8 change your mind about trying Microsoft's newest operating system? Let me know in the comments!

The $40 price tag makes upgrading much more appealing. Since the deal runs through January, I’ll probably wait a few months to see what other folks think of Windows 8 and to give Microsoft time to work out any kinks that may appear.
Microsoft, just because they have a generous heart, is going to reduce the download cost for the new Win 8 operating system from $100 to $40! My gut feeling is that the WIN 8 edition just may turn out to be not as desirable an operating system as they hope. And past editions of windows (vista and even Win7) were not that earth shaking to say the least: Nowhere near what occurred upon the introduction of WIN XP. And Win XP continues the grudging slow death only because Microsoft deems it so.
But I will, at some point have to make the decision on just what my “new” operating system will be; Win.8 or APPLE. If I were to make a decision today it would be Apple with no hesitation.
The business decision to reduce the price to previous users of Windows tells me that Microsoft has made the decision that the value of Win 8 will not support the $100 in added cost. And microsoft does not want another looser similar to Vista. The geeks out there will make Win. 8 a laughing joke.
At least that is my take.
No. I’m so sick of being held ‘hostage’ by big corporations…I’ve switched to ‘open source’ software with GREAT results. NO viruses, NO daily updates, NO computer slow downs…HEAVEN!
I’m with ellen, been using Linux for years and it’s great. However $40 is a tempting price. Tried the release candidate and it was OK, but not worth the regular price. I don’t have a tablet!
I agree with Harry P, with the exception of his preference for Apple. I am and always will be a PC man; while I absolutely adore iDevices, I feel like that’s all Apple is good for, especially since it’s legal to alter iOS.
I stayed with Windows 98 SE until its final harrowed, dying breath, and I will do the same with Windows XP Professional. XP was garbage when it first came out, but with time and thanks to many individuals gullible enough to snatch a fresh Bill Gates special out of the manure fields of silicon valley, its been improved (dare I say reinvented) to become the picture of performance, reliability and security that it is today.
While I would find it to be interesting to work on customers’ machines with Windows 8, my next OS will (in all likeliness) be Windows 7, but not until after WinXP Pro has been read its last rites and the funeral wailers have all gone home for afternoon tea.
Right on, Michael Balentine.
Even though Ms Win8 is an attractive (and cheap to entertain) hussy, WinXP and I are in a monogamous relationship until death do us part.
Michael B. – If your computer needs haven’t progressed past an OS that can’t support 4GB of memory or more, you really shouldn’t be reading or responding to anything that even mentions future programs or technologies.
XP has not become some “picture of performance, reliability and security”. Last year it had as many published vulnerabilities as Win7, find proof here: http://www.cvedetails.com/product-list/product_type-o/vendor_id-26/firstchar-/Operating-Systems.html
So, please… spare us the “they don’t make em like they used to talk,” when the reality is… they’re making the same quality products that they always have. Nostalgia has it’s place: cars, archtecture, music, clothing. There’s no real need for it when dealing with Operating Systems. For the future, please avoid technology discussions when your needs haven’t outgrown what was the norm for users 10 years ago.
we should look at the big picture here .. Microsoft had never released two decent operating systems in a row …
95 …. i dont want to even think about it – bugs bugs bugs -
98 …. which was great at the time and great step forward
me …. they tried to do sth but did nothing in the end just some tweaks here and there
xp …. a solid system that had alot of room for improvement and the final version of it was the best operation system that Microsoft have ever released
7 …. it is good but absolutely not greatest it is fast but cant break so it crashed alot when people pushed it to the limits
8 …. ????? lets just wait and see but if those versions where the best “98,xp,” then 8 should fallow
