Beep! Beep!

Friday September 4, 2009

If you ever turn your computer on only to be greeted by a series of strange beeps, you should probably pay attention. No, your computer isn't greeting you with a classical masterpiece during boot up - it's trying to tell you that something is seriously wrong.

These beep codes sound in specific patterns that represent specific issues the system has encountered. Follow these troubleshooting steps to quickly discover the cause of the problem and then what to do to get your PC up and working again.

Tim, I have read plenty of horror stories about trying to update you own drivers. Is there a good, updater on the market I can use – and trust? Surely rolling back a driver gives you an older one which can make the situation worse? Can you recommend a good product for the home user please? Driver Detective is advertised a lot. Thanks, Bob.

Bob, I have yet to look into these programs in great detail. I used one years ago that caused more problems that it could ever had prevented and I haven’t tried one since. These are programs I’m planning on looking at and reviewing in the future but I can’t recommend one right now.

Rolling back a driver shouldn’t make any situation worse. All a driver roll back does is return the driver to the previous ONE before your update. So the worst case scenario is that you’re back to the driver you had before you started updating. No harm no foul.

The biggest selling point for these programs in my opinion is that they make the driver update process very easy. I’d argue that it’s easy anyway with a bit of help but I understand the appeal and see the value for some.

I’ll be sure to blog about these programs as I get more experience with them.
