What is a Netbook?

Ever heard of a netbook? It's a relatively new computer hardware term and they're different in many ways from the laptop that we're all familiar with.

According to Mark Kyrnin, About.com Guide to PC Hardware / Reviews:

"Netbooks are the hottest trend in personal computers today. Their extremely small size and very low price tag make them very attractive to people looking for a low cost yet portable laptop that they can bring just about anywhere."

See Mark's excellent comparison between netbooks and laptops in his What Are Netbooks? article.

Mark also keeps an updated list of the Best Netbook Laptops complete with reviews. I highly recommend that you check it out.

I have an Acer Netbook that is not booting. It gets so far and stops. I called the support line and because they are aware of this issue and it isn’t covered under the warantee, they wanted me to pay over the phone by the minute for someone to walk me through the process of fixing it.

Are you kidding me? The tech suggested that it would be fixed in about an hour and a half – total bill to fix almost as much as the netbook was to begin with.

Have you heard of the issue with computer not booting properly? It’s Window’s XP home and even trying to reboot in safe mode or going back to the last good boot doesn’t work.

Any advice?? Thanks!

Tina, there are a near infinite number of reasons why a computer wont’ boot up from a simple software issue to a major hardware failure and everywhere in between. Netbooks are harder to troubleshoot problems like these because you don’t typically have access to a CD drive and original Windows installation media. When you boot up, do you have a recovery option you can enter?
