Chkdsk (pronounced as "check disk") is a bad-hard-drive-sector-fix-it tool that's been part of the Windows command-line arsenal for a long time.
This tool can really come in handy in Windows XP when you have a serious problem that's preventing Windows from starting and you think that a hard drive issue might be at the root of the problem.
All you have to do is boot to the Windows XP Recovery Console and then run chkdsk with the right switch:
