What's the First Thing You Do?

Sunday November 30, 2008
When you realize something is wrong with your computer, what's the first thing you do?

Do you hop on your other computer and do a quick Internet search? Do you tackle the problem yourself before looking for help? Do you call tech support right away? Or maybe you call your techy friend/brother/sister/dad...?

(1) Wardell says:

I always try and solve the problem myself first, if I can’t find a solution myself I’ll ask my brother for some advise, if that fails as well then I’ll salvage what I can and reformat.

(2) Carter says:

The first thing I do is look over what changes I have made just before the thing went haywire, and undo that/them. If that doesn’t work, I go to google and try to find an answer on the web. And if THAT doesn’t fly, I call one of my computer-savvy friends. C

I always see if I can fix the problem myself. Many times, its a small issue, doing the old power down and power up routine sometimes does the trick, other times powering up in safe mode or with the “last working” does it. I always make sure I write down everything I do and everything I change…so if it doesn’t work.. I change it back and start over. Once this is exhausted, I do check the internet, a lot of good info that works and also need to watch for all the sales pitches that aren’t really fixes. If I pursue several fixes and they don’t work… I stop and leave it for another day, its amazing what new ideas come my way.

(5) Hal Robinson says:

REBOOT before any thing else! Don’t go google & download any repair utilities just because they sound good. If you get an error message cut & paste the number in the search box at:http://support.microsoft.com/ If the problem cropperd up after the latest install of a program delete that program. REBOOT again! Check system restore if a restore point was created right before the problem occured restore to that point. REBOOT again!

Google is the king of problem solving as far as software is concerned. For hardware, research and experimentation solved all of my issues. Techsupport has never assited me with anything.

p.s. The first step in preventative maintenance is removing Windows…

(7) Avdhesh says:

I always first prefer to check the changes I made last time be it Hardware/Software. Then removing them & checking if it is working fine.

Then system restore in case of system software upgrades.

Then I use internet for my problems.

Atlast my friends are always waiting for me :)

(9) BLW says:

I would try to fix the problem myself, search the problem online or ask my friend who knows more about computers than I do. If I can’t find a solution, I know that searching online always leads me to an answer I was looking for.

i fix it myself its almost always some thing i can fix and if i cant fix it, it’s probably because some thing died in my computer then i just replace it. if this still doesn’t work i ask my step dad who owns his own computer business and get it fixed for free in no time at all
