BSOD's in Windows Vista and Windows XP

Monday November 3, 2008
I don't regularly see Blue Screens of Death in Windows Vista... in fact, I don't see them much in Windows XP either. It was much more of a problem in previous versions of Windows.

A colleague of mine disagrees. A lot. My experience just hasn't been the same for some reason so I'd like to settle the argument among my readers :).

Do you see the BSOD on a regular basis on your (or other's) PCs? If so (or if not), what OS do you use? Do you think Vista or XP is less error prone than the other or than previous versions of Windows?

I’ve never seen a whole lot of BSOD, but even less now with Vista (which isn’t to say there aren’t lots of other problems, just not this one.)

I remember getting a BSOD on Win. 98 at least a couple times a week, usually more often. However, with XP, I only got one or two a month. Now, with Vista, I’ve only seen three times since I started using it (about April of last year).

I have have a laptop with vista and lately if been getting the BSOD. Everytime it happens i noticed that my RAM also decreases. When i bought it, it had 1287 MB RAM and now it only has 998 or something like that. I was also wondering if i reinstall the OS would i get that memory Back?

Thanks

I have been using Vista Home Premium, on a laptop, since June 2007 and have been lucky enough to have not encountered the BSOD.

I’ve never gotten the BSOD on a regular basis with any version of windows, and maybe once or twice during the years I’ve been using Vista.

I have never seen a BSOD in the 18 months I’ve been using XP Home. Only saw it once in 5 years with Win2K, and twice in 7 years with Win98. I haven’t tried Vista and so can’t comment.

I agree with you, each Windows version has improved to the point where soon the BSOD will be a thing of the past. I rarely encountered it in XP and have yet to in Vista. However, the computers my nieces and nephews touch is another story. If they would only listen to good old Uncle Tony…

I use both Vista (Notebook) and Windows XP (PC) and I haven’t seen the BSOD on either system. When I had Windows 98 The BSOD and I were very well aquainted. It happened often. I do like try different things with the computer so some of them may have been my fault.
Both Vista and Windows XP are very stable. And for those who say they don’t like Vista I think they just don’t want to exert the extra time it takes to learn your way around the program. Yes there is a learning curve but its a great program.

(10) Jim says:

I have seldom seen a BSOD in any OS from the NT track (The earliest OS I used on that branch was NT4.) I presently have Vista Ultimate. Although I can’t remember ever seeing a BSOD in the six months that I’ve used it, it seems to run very slowly, even though I have it running on some pretty good hardware. XP Home ran just fine on my first laptop, and I may load it on the new one, too, and ditch Vista. On the Win 9x machines I’ve had, BSODs were just a fact of life – that entire branch of Microsoft’s OS offerings was unstable.

(11) Andy says:

I had Vista Ultimate installed on an A-open Computer. Was getting about 2 – 3 Blue Screens per week. Took the Desktop computer back to the person who built it. He could find no problems with it. We updated the BIOS on it and now it was giving continuous Blue Screens when we started it up. We checked the download on another computer, and found that the Motherboard to update the Bios was not Vista Compatable. We installed a new Asus Motherboard. Reinstalled Vista, and have had no Blue Screens since.
