Have You Tried an Online Backup Service?

Wednesday September 17, 2008
Have you had a chance to give one of those new online backup services a try? Mozy and Carbonite are are couple of the higher profile services.

Online backup services work just traditional backup software programs but instead of backing up to a DVD or a tape, you're backing up to a secure datacenter in some other part of the world.

If you've have tried one, which service did you try and what did you think? If you haven't tried one, why not?

Here are a few that I like: Top 3 Online Backup Services.

I’ve been using Carbonite since it came out, attracted by its low price for unlimited data as well as its simplicity. It just doesn’t get any easier to use for my clients. If you have any data at all how could it not be worth $50/year to know that it’s safe? I’ve had the occasional problem with Carbonite but it’s usually pretty easy to fix. Restores are a simple matter of dragging and dropping from the Carbonite “drive.” I just wish it would do mapped network drives as well.

Yep, I’ve been using Carbonite too for about a year. It just works. Frankly, you can just ignore it until you have some kind of disaster. I like that it doesn’t require any attention.

Hi, Bill and Ron. I’m carbonite’s CEO and just wanted to thank you for the positive comments. Our goal is simple, reliable, and the best value. If you want to see a picture of a LOT of disk drives, take a look at my blog on the Carbonite web site (www.carbonite.com/blog). This data center gets almost 60 million new files every day.

I’ve tried a couple of programs. I ended up going with ElephantDrive because I could get both computers in one account. It was pretty easy to set up and I’ve been using it for about a year. No disasters yet (knock on wood), but I have had a couple of instances where I needed to get to some files and it has been a snap.

I would definitely recommend it.

Hi Tim, great article. I see you ranked IDrive as your #2 pick on the “Top 3 Online Backup Services” list. I just wanted to let you know we recently launched IDrive v.3.0, which has a much better GUI and user-experience. I’d like to invite you to check it out. You can sign up for a free 2GB account.

I’m currently using mobileme – which is okay, but I’m probably not signing up for a second year. I’ve heard great things about Carbonite – especially from Leo Laporte.

One of the big drawbacks to Carbonite is the price is per hard drive. I use a MAC, 1 or 2 Windows laptops, an iPod Touch and a Windows desktop. So . . . I doubt Carbonite is right for me.

After at least a cursory look, SugarSync looks pretty good – good reviews. I have about 11.5 months to decide.
