Share Your Thoughts on Computer Support Services

Thursday September 4, 2008
Anyone have any experiences with major national/international computer support services that they'd like to share? You know who I'm talking about - Geek Squad (Best Buy), ctrlcenter (OfficeMax), etc.

There are many online-only support services too like PlumChoice, Support.com, and more.

You know I'm all about fixing your computer problems yourself but there often does come a time for many people where the convenience of one of these much-advertised support services is just too tempting to pass up.

If you've tried one of them out and have a disaster story, post a comment! If you're a Geek Squad fan for life, let us know!

I’m not a Geek Squad fan but I have friends that won’t go anywhere else. I think they’re too expensive. Haven’t used any other pro service.

Ugh – Geek Squad. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve run across who have been unfortunate enough to try them, just because they advertise a lot and people don’t know where else to go. My favorite story was a client who took his laptop to Geek Squad due to a wireless access problem. They told him he needed a new computer, or at least a new motherboard. I fixed his problem in 15 seconds with 3 clicks of the mouse.

I don’t doubt that there is the occasional gem technician working there, but don’t count on it – who knows who you are going to end up with and what they are going to do.

I tried using their extended warranty service. When my computer broke they tried everything to blame the problem on me except their product. A friendly advise is not to use them as much as possible.

I was really impressed with ITLabs. They helped my company out of a major bind! Here is their site, they are based out of the UK.
