Test Your Computer's Memory for Free
Thursday March 27, 2008
I was answering a question over in the forums today and I recommended to someone having weird error that they test their memory. The error message didn't say anything all about a memory problem but I assure you that doesn't matter. When was the last time you saw an error message that actually meant what it said? Exactly.
The memory in your computer is the working space for everything that it does. If your memory is having a problem, just about anything can happen - lock-ups, random error messages, lost files, startup problems... I could go on and on.
Lucky for us, there are some very powerful and completely free memory testing tools that anyone can use. Believe it or not, it's basically the same diagnostic software that nearly every computer-fix-it store uses.
Even if you have no use for it right now, it would be very wise to keep one of these memory tests in your arsenal of tools.

What do you do when you have a laptop without a cd-burner and can’t use floppy disk ?
Borrow someone else’s CD burner.
Seriously – that’s a good option. Or you can order a CD from the Memtest86 folks.
I’m assuming you have a CD drive just not a burner. If you’re without any sort of media drive then you’re pretty much out of luck.
Tim please tell me one solution.
I have a PC which supports 533MHz DDR2 RAM!
Which RAM should I buy a DDR2 400MHz one or a DDR2 667MHz one! Pls Reply on purnesh.xyz@gmail.com
Surely there must be a better less complicated memory tester or is writer a paid endorser?
Rob,
Paid endorser of a free memory tester? Nope. Certainly not.
Any professional technician will tell you that these are the best memory testers, free or otherwise.
There are “easier” ones to use but those do cost something.
